Objectives The main focus of this lecture and seminar is on functional polymeric materials, their structure/property-correlations and specific applications of such materials.
Subject The covered topics include:

  • Definition of functional polymeric materials
  • Electrical behavior of polymeric materials (e.g., dielectric, ferroelectric and conductive materials)
  • Optical behavior (incl. basic optical properties, transparent insulation materials, polymeric materials for liquid crystal displays and thermotropic materials)
  • Thermal behavior (thermal expansion, conductivity and heat capacity and ) of polymeric materials (incl. foams),
  • Barrier properties of polymeric materials (incl. polymeric membranes)
  • Specific processing methods for functional polymeric materials (e.g., wet-chemical and vapor deposition methods)

In the seminar case studies to specific topics are performed by the students incl. a literature search, an oral presentation and a discussion.
