Detailed information
Original study plan Master's programme Polymer Technologies and Science (PTS) 2022W
Objectives The main objectives of this lab course are

  • to establish know-how in advanced testing and characterization of polymeric materials (incl. structure/property relationships)
  • to gather practical experience on advanced testing machines and competencies in data reduction and evaluation, and
  • to strengthen the competencies in scientific-technical reporting and presentation.
Subject In accordance with the associated lectures Polymeric Materials 3 (Polymer Mechanics and Fracture Mechanics) and Polymeric Materials 4 (Functional Polymeric Materials) the main topics of the lab course are:

  • Quasistatic plane-strain fracture toughness and strain energy release rate testing of plastic materials
  • Fatigue testing of polymeric materials under cyclic loading
  • Essential work of fracture testing of polymeric films and sheets
  • Advanced tensile testing – Strain determination of plastic materials using digital image correlation
  • Advanced microscopic characterization of multi-phase and multi-layer films and laminates
  • Spectrophotometric characterization of polymeric films and sheets in the solar and heat radiation range
Criteria for evaluation Oral and written examination
