Objectives Students understand the major international differences in the design of social protection systems. In addition, they reflect on the functioning and quality criteria of comparative analysis in the social science literature on comparative welfare state research.
Subject
  • Overview of the functions and manifestations of comparison in social science research on social policy
  • The comparison as an empirical technique and instrument for substantiating for theoretical statements.
  • Observation of the conceptual insights in their implementation: Examples of comparative studies of select aspects of welfare state development in social science journals. Students reconstruct the conceptual argument of these academic articles and evaluate the comparative design and the success in the use of comparative observations as empirical evidence of the argument.
