Ziele First of all, the students develop an understanding of the main preconditions of research design, data collection and alternative methods of data analyses. These basic skills are needed when attempting in other methodological courses and planning own thesis. The course will provide students with an overview about comparative research in the field of social policy: methods, subjects and reasons for its popularity executed by self-study.

The aim is that students will be able:

- to understand why comparisons are done

- to recognize different kinds of comparative social policy comparisons

- to identify different kinds of data that are used in comparative social policy

- to name various methods that are used in comparative social policy studies

- to read comparative research with a critical eye

Lehrinhalte The aim of the literature examination is to give students the opportunity to gain insight into the discourse on methodology of social research. This includes the main ideas and methods of quantitative and qualitative research.

Beurteilungskriterien 100% Book examination. This course is completed by independent reading of literature followed by an exam on a set of recommended books. The time to complete the test is four hours.
