The master thesis examines a topic from one of the core subjects (Information Engineering, Software Engineering, Data & Knowledge Engineering, Communications Engineering) or specialization subjects (Information Engineering & Management, Service Engineering, Business Intelligence, Business Engineering & Management) of Business Informatics with at least 12 ECTS points passed (thereby courses of a special competence passed in the bachelor study do also count). To obtain the degree in one of the major fields of study offered by the master program, the master thesis has to cover the same major field.
Students can start their master thesis upon completion of all subjects relevant to the chosen topic, as specified by their advisor.
The master thesis is a written assignment. Its topic comprises a workload of 26 ECTS points. Several students may work on the same topic only if each person’s individual contribution is clearly separable; each part is graded independently.
The master study of Business Informatics is completed with a master exam.
The master exam comprises two parts: The first part of the master exam is the successful completion of all compulsory and elective subjects according to §§ 6 and 7.
The second part of the master exam (with 1 ECTS point) is the final oral exam on the topic of the master thesis, including a disputation of the master thesis, as well as on a special competence in Business Informatics, Business Sciences (except for "Selected topics in Business Sciences"), or Informatics (except for "Selected topics in Informatics").
Each examination subject have to be passed with at least 12 ECTS points each, where courses of the master program do also count if they were passed in the bachelor study.
If the topic of the master thesis is assigned to a special competence in Business Informatics, also a core subject of Business Informatics (Information Engineering, Software Engineering, Data & Knowledge Engineering, Communications Engineering) cab be chosen as second examination subject.
If the degree is to be obtained in one of the major fields of study, the following must be strictly adhered to: The examination subject has to be either a special competency in Business Informatics or the "Special competence in Informatics - Major field of study" or the "Special competence in Business Sciences - Major field of study". If the major field of study comprises a special competence in Business Sciences or a special competence in Informatics which accounts for at least 18 ECTS points, this special competence must be chosen as second examination subject.
The examination covers the topic of the master thesis and also the contents of the courses of the chosen examination subject.
Admission to the second part of the master exam requires completion of the first part of the master exam and moreover positive assessments of the master thesis, the master seminar and the free electives.
The second part of the master exam is conducted by two examiners and it is assessed with a single grade. The legal regulations concerning the choice of examiners in § 30 of the constitution of the Johannes Kepler University do apply. The supervisor of the master thesis must be chosen as major examiner.
