Objectives During your MGB journey, you will experience three different business environments, and learn what similarities cross all three, as well as the differences in each. By the end of this course, you will have developed a deeper understanding about how to do business effectively in Canada and the United States. Specifically, you will learn about historical, demographic and geographical influences on North American business practices, examine the roles of government, law, politics and industry, and make forecasts about the future of business in North America. By the end of this course, you will have developed a foundation for business excellence within the North American context.
By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • Identify aspects of the business environment that are distinct to North America.
  • Demonstrate professional behaviors that will help you succeed as a North American business person.
  • Critically examine assumptions about the North American business environment.
  • Analyze a North American business, to unearth underlying values, norms and assumptions

- How does North American history and geography influence business today? Who are North Americans?
- How are North American human resources managed effectively?
- What is distinct about business law in North America?
- What is the government’s role in North American business?
- How does NAFTA influence North American business? AND What does it mean to do the right thing in North America?

Methods Group Work: The purpose of group work is to enhance your skill in working collaboratively. When a group-based assignment forms part of your evaluation for a grade, all members of the group will receive the same grade. Any exception to this policy, such as adjustments for relative contribution, will be specified in writing prior to the grading of the assignment.

Attendance: The University of Victoria Calendar states: “Students are expected to attend all classes in which they are enrolled.” Attending class is an important part of the learning process in this course. Attendance exposes you to material not in the readings, to your classmates' insights and helps clarify material that can lead to better performance in the course. You are expected to attend all classes.
