Ziele |
The course objective is to stimulate active discussion on the structure and development of European employment systems and help students understand reasons for disparities, variations, and path dependences within the development of European labor markets and employment systems.

Lehrinhalte |
The course focuses on national employment systems as social constructions and, as a broader phenomenon, as labor markets. The concept of the employment system will be used as an analytical tool for comparative studies on employment. Active discussion will examine employment systems that have been developing as national constructions and the internal and external reasons that will eventually place pressure on developing these systems under conditions of European employment model.
The development of national employment systems will be examined from different perspectives in accordance to the weekly topics listed below. In all, 6 topics will be addressed:
• Introduction to Employment Systems concept, national models and variation
• New space and geography of work and trends of population
• Changing boundaries of formal and informal work
• Regulation of work and industrial relations
• Transitional spaces of work
• Moving towards a European employment system model

Beurteilungskriterien |
The criteria to pass the course include active participation during in-class discussions (4 ECTS credits). In addition, students are required to submit an essay on a topic related to material covered during the course. The essay and class participation will be evaluated on an individual basis. Students are required to participate regularly in discussions on given topics and make use of all provided materials.

Lehrmethoden |
Modes of study: This online course will be a virtual, Intranet based course accessible via the Moodle learning platform. Students will be instructed on how to use the platform. Each topic will be divided into three work-packages: a virtual lecture, required readings (two articles related to the lecture), and active participation when evaluating lectures and articles. OR 100% book exam.
Teaching methods: Online learning including regular interaction between students and the instructor in the form of written responses, discussions and reflective essays.
