Objectives The course describes the main features that are attached to Nordic welfare societies. Special emphasis is on the Finnish welfare society but references to other countries are made. This way the position of the Finnish welfare society in relation to other European countries is made explicit. After the course students will be able:

  • to recognize different welfare regimes
  • to understand the main features of the Nordic welfare regime - to point some of the main differences between Nordic welfare societies.
Subject The course offers an introduction to the main features of the Nordic welfare states and welfare model. Some of the following social policy themes will be covered: Nordic welfare model and universalism, labour markets and employment, work and equality, poverty and basic security, child care policies and citizenship.
Criteria for evaluation Active participation during the Intensive Programme and in the Moodle on-line learning environment, written assignments.
Methods Introduction during the Intensive Programme at the beginning of the semester, afterwards on-line learning methods supported by Moodle.
