Ziele The students will acquire an understanding of how welfare states are created and become more familiar with the great narratives in welfare development. Students will then be in a position to elaborate on the "larger questions" and provide cross-national comparisons focusing on methods, means and actors in order to evaluate the actual performance in a historic context.
Lehrinhalte This course provides a historical overview of the ideas, concepts and models found in social policy development in Europe and throughout the world. The course will examine the role of theoretical concepts, economic and political factors that influence the establishment of a national welfare state as well as address the importance of role models and "welfare myths".
Beurteilungskriterien Grades: 70% term paper & 30% active class participation. Mandatory for those who plan to take the course as alternative.
Lehrmethoden This course, offered partly online, will provide students with 8 large-scale topics. The required readings can be accessed on Moodle and students must turn in short written statements on the reading material.
