Objectives Most control systems do not simply need to fulfill their primary requirements, but they need to do this as good as possible. This course shows how to solve optimization problems in control using available analytical and numerical tools. The course is mainly methodological but the associated labs allow realizing how theory and practice can (and should) match. The course is built up as a systematic introduction consisting of system/problem analysis, general analytical and numerical methods and their use for control design.
Subject
  • The structure and components of a control loop
  • Problems: stabilization – tracking control - robustness - disturbance suppression
  • Fundamentals of Optimization
  • Formulation and solution of the problems of control engineering as optimization problems
  • Controller design using optimization methods
  • Robust formulations

Practical tasks are presented in the course and treated in detail in the laboratory

  • Automotive control
  • Glucose control (diabetes)
  • Control of a 2-DOF helicopter
