Original study plan Master's programme Joint Master Programme Biological Chemistry 2018W
Objectives To provide students with an understanding of glycobiochemistry.
Subject Carbohydrate-protein interface in regards to their biochemical, cellular, medicinal and biotechnological aspects will be in main focus of this lecture series: to proceed biochemistry knowledge in the area of carbohydrate moieties of glycoproteins as well as in carbohydrate binding proteins (lectins, enzymes, etc.), and their interactions with carbohydrate molecules, and to draw attention to use of modern techniques in glycobiochemistry.

Following topics will be addressed:

• Introduction to glycobiology: glycosylation as a post-translational modification

• Glycosylation enzyme machinary and carbohydrate/glycan-modifying enzymes

• Carbohydrates and glycoconjugates in the biology of living organisms

• Carbohydrate/Glycan-binding proteins

• Analytical approaches in glycobiochemistry: function and structure

• Medicinal consequences of protein-carbohydrate/glycan interactions

• Industrial glycobiochemistry
