Ziele (*)Global Management and Strategy is an integrating module that aims the developing strategic thinking in a global context, with special focus on the Polymer and Chemical industry. The course combines theoretical and practical insights into how companies manage international operations and strategies. Concepts and theory are learned through an integrated blend of lectures, case studies and enriched with a lecture of a guest speaker from the technical area. The main objectives of this course are:

• To introduce students to international business and global strategy

• To gain the understanding of strategy formulation and implementation and to apply them to a global setting.

• To understand decision making in an international context

• To make students aware of the many competing arguments behind a number of strategic approaches

• To emphasize the generalistic nature of management work

• To have students work together as a team

Lehrinhalte (*)Upon completion of this course, students should be able to apply the contents of the course to their specific areas of study and:

• Conduct strategic analysis in a global setting

• Understand and evaluate the processes of strategy formulation and implementation in a global setting

• Apply strategic planning techniques and tools for strategic analysis

• Analytically prepare management decisions facing all firms

• Master tools and practices for structuring and controlling operations on a global basis

• Have the know how to obtain and analyze information which will aid in decision making.

• Have the ability to analyze cases which approximates closely to global business situations.

Beurteilungskriterien (*)The assessment of this course is based on the individual and the group level: Level Assessment Percentage

  • Individual Case Study Analysis 30%
  • Individual Short tests at the beginning of sessions 2, 3 and 4 30%
  • Group of 2 Real Situation Analysis Paper 30%
  • Group of 2 Real Situation Analysis Presentation 10%

A total of 100 (=100%) points can be reached. In each of the assessment categories, 50% of the points have to be reached in order to pass the course. For a positive grade, at least 60% of the total points is required. The final grade will be calculated according to the following formula: 0-59 (5); 60-69 (4); 70-79 (3); 80-89 (2); 90-100 (1).

Lehrmethoden (*)The course is comprised of five sessions. The course language is English. Throughout the course, a combination of lectures and applied discussions of case studies and / or current events in international business are used with the objective of applying the course content to students´ specific area of study. As much as the learning occurs through class discussions, students are expected to attend all the classes for their whole duration- Active in-class participation in the discussions and group exercises is essential for students to get the full value of the class.

Literatur (*)We offer a package containing all preparatory readings for this course. Students are expected to read the texts for each session in advance. The reading package can be purchased at the department´s secretary´s office (Hochschulfondsgebäude, 2nd floor, room 224) one week prior to the beginning of the course. Please note that there are preparatory readings already for the first course session. The reading pack consists of cases studies and texts about Strategy, International Business, Internationalization, Managing global expansion and Global Strategic Management that give a theoretical base for students to analyze the cases. In order to prepare for the course, students need to do the pre-course reading, which provides a necessary foundation for the classes. It is the responsibility of every student to come to class having thoroughly prepared the assigned readings. In addition, all assignments have to be handed in on time. Hence, substantial out-of-class work is required of all students to successfully complete the course. The group assignments require the group to meet outside of class. Make sure your schedule allows enough time for this. Case studies have to be prepared prior to the class and a maximum of 4 pages analysis of each case has to be handled in at the beginning of the class. Late submission will result in zero point awarded for the assignment.
