- Definition I: biopolymers (protein, DNA, carbohydrates, lipids) are subjected to chemical modification or genetic engineering to enhance their functional properties and tailor them to specific applications in industry or healthcare
- Definition II: generation of enzymes that are used as tools for the bio-assisted industrial synthesis of vitamins or oligosaccharides
