Detailed information |
Original study plan |
Bachelor's programme Mechanical Engineering 2020W |
Objectives |
Knowledge of most important machine elements regarding function, design and dimensioning. Understanding the relevant physical (mechanics of solid and fluid materials) technical (materials, strength of materials) and mathematical fundamentals and the ability to apply these fundamentals to mechanical design problems; Basics of the design of machine components and assemblies.
|
Subject |
Introduction
Shafts: Function, design, manufacturing, dimensioning, strength analysis
Hub-shaft joints: shrink fit, conical seat, feather and multiple spline joints
Roller bearings: contact stresses, types and construction of roller bearings, dimensioning, lubrication and design of seats, sealing problems
Journal bearings: lubrication theory and design
Welded joints: dimensioning and design
Gears: functions and types
spur and bevel gears: kinematics of gears, stress analysis and design
Worm gears
Belt and chain drives, CVTs of belt or chain type
Couplings, clutches and breaks: simple thermal analysis of clutches and breaks

Criteria for evaluation |
Written and oral exam; written exam encompasses a basic problem, which must be solved to an 2/3 extent (10 of 15 reachable points) and a second problem. Both problems concern the assessment of a small machine assembly by calculations. In total 15 points out of 20 max. possible must be reached to pass the written exam and to be allowed to take the oral exam. In case the candidate has tried 3 times he/she is allowed to take the oral exam anyway. In the oral exam typically two questions are raised, which are mostly rather general. The candidate is given some minutes to prepare for the answering. The examiner typically asks interim questions to check the mastering of the subject.
