Objectives The introductory course on internal combustion engines gives an application-oriented overview of the different aspects of modern engine design. It gives the mechatronics students the ability to understand and evaluate the layout and structure of an internal combustion engine.
Subject All relevant subject areas are presented, in particular - Structure and function of engine and components
- Use of characteristic numbers and mpas
- Mixture formation, ignition and combustion
- Thermodynamics of the combustion engine
- Gas exchange and charge control, in particular turbocharging
- Technical fuels - chemistry, physics and technology
- Pollutant formation, emissions and laws

The physical and technical laws apply in the same way for all engines, e.g. for vehicles, for model aircrafts as well as for large ships. A system analysis which includes application and environment, shows the interaction of motor and drive system.
