Objectives Get basic knowledge of electric machines and measurement technology
Subject Students are introduced to the characteristic properties of the different electrical machines and get a comprehension of the basics of measurement technology. Four-hour lab exercises address six different topics:

Brushed DC Machine: This part focuses on the characteristic properties of the DC machine. Examples include operation under no load, machine losses, and the motoric and generatoric load curves. An important part is the effects of armature reaction.

Induction Machine: In this lesson, an induction machine with contact rings on the rotor is used to create the standardised measurements. The measuring procedure is very common to the one described in the section above(no-load characteristic, short circuit test and measure points under different loads). Hence, the characteristic relations (torque-speed-characteristic, Osanna's circuit and parameters of the equivalent circuit) can be identified.

Synchronous Machine: A current-excited synchronous machine is operated with an inverter at constant voltage and frequency. The focus lies on the measurement and computation of all machine parameters. By this means, the vector diagram can be constructed for different points of operations in all four quadrants.

Topics in Measurement Technology: Bridge circuits (characterization of unknown impedances), Measurement amplifiers (basic operational amplifier circuits, instrumentation amplifier), Analog-digital, digital-analog converter, Current measurement through field measurements (Hall effect sensor, magneto-resistive sensor, flux meter), Resistive strain gauge, Temperature measurement, Flow measurement, Pressure measurement, Rotational speed measurement (tacho sensor, inductive sensor, fork light barrier sensor, Reed relais)
