Ziele (*)This course introduces students to a range of mathematical concepts and techniques that form the basis for applications inside and outside chemistry, such as the ones required of students enrolled in Biological Chemistry/Chemistry Bachelor and Master programs. The course provides an introduction to the mathematics. During the exercise classes, the application of different mathematical techniques and methods is considered and confirmed by numerous examples. The aim of the course is to provide students with a detailed overview of the major mathematical ideas and methods for solving general and chemistry-related practical problems.
Lehrinhalte (*)The following mathematical topics are covered:

Integral calculus: Definition of definite and indefinite integration, integrals of standard functions, geometric meaning of integration; properties of integrals, fundamental relation between integration and differentiation, integration rules (substitution, integration by part, partial integration). Complex numbers: definition and calculation rules, algebraic, polar and exponential representation of complex numbers and the corresponding calculation rules.

Linear algebra: vector spaces, matrices, matrix multiplication, inverse of a matrix, systems of linear equations. Functions in several variables: partial differentiation, gradients Hesse matrix, stationary points for functions in more than one variable. Integration in several variables.
