Objectives basic understanding and knowledge of physical chemistry
Subject Physical chemistry establishes and develops the principles of matter and its changes in terms of the underlying concepts of physics and mathematics. Thus, experimental observation can be transformed in the language of mathematics to explain and interpret physical and chemical properties of matter. This lecture explains the principles of physical chemistry and their applications to the study of the life sciences, particularly biological chemistry leading to an understanding of the processes responsible for life. At the end of this course students should have basic knowledge in

  1. Biochemical thermodynamics
  • Introduction with repetition of First and Second Law of thermodynamics
  • Phase equilibria
    • Phase transitions in biopolymers and aggregates
    • Thermodynamic description of mixtures
      • Chemical potential
      • Ideal and ideal dilute solutions
  • Colligative properties
  • Chemical equilibrium
  1. The kinetic of biochemical processes
  • Rates of reactions
  • Rate laws
  • Temperature dependence of reaction rates
  • Complex reactions and reaction mechanisms
    • Rate determining step
    • Steady state approximation
    • Enzyme kinetics
  • Reaction dynamics
    • Kinetic theory of gases
    • Collision theory
    • Transition state theory
  • Transport phenomena
