Original study plan |
Bachelor's programme Fundamentals of Natural Sciences for Technology 2018W |
Objectives |
In this lecture, we present selected topics from mathematics. Starting from the curriculum of a typical Austrian secondary school, we will acquire more advanced mathematical methods. The course can serve as a basis for more specialized lectures in natural and technical sciences. Since the course starts from the material taught in secondary schools, it is appropriate also for secondary school students who want to enlarge their knowledge on mathematics.

Subject |
Probability calculus and Probability Theory. It is a paradox situation that we would not believe a person who tells us that casting a dice 100 times, s/he obtained 100 times 6 in a row, but on the other hand, we cannot completely exclude this possibilty. We will investigate what mathematical sciences can tell about this and how a „rigorous“ discipline such as mathematics can make assertions on a „random“ process such as casting a dice. To this end, we will study problems arising in data compression.
