Objectives Gaining experience in performing quantitative chemical analyses in the laboratory
Subject Students will get practical analytical experience in the lab by doing quantitative determinations based on basic techniques such as precipitation, titrations, light absorbance, or potentiometry. Students have to work independently and carry out the following analyses:

  1. Quantitative gravimetric determination of nickel ions
  2. Quantitation of acetic acid by an acid/base titration (including the standardizing of the titrant NaOH solution with a primary standard)
  3. Determination of water hardness (complexometric titration with EDTA)
  4. Quantitation of copper ions by a redox titration (including the standardization of the titrant sodium thiosulfate with a primary standard)
  5. Quantitation of Fe(II) by a redox titration (including the standardization of the titrant potassium permanganate with a primary standard
  6. Quantitation of chloride by titration with silver nitrate using a potentiometric end point detection
  7. Quantitation of total Fe in a surface water sample after derivatization with a color reagent followed by photometric analysis
  8. Semi-quantitative nalysis of a commercially available pharmaceutical formulation by thin layer chromatography
  9. Quantitation of Ca by atomic absorption spectroscopy
  10. Quantitation of fluoride in a sample of tooth paste using a fluoride-selective electrode
Criteria for evaluation Quality of practical work in the lab; Lab reports on practical work; Final oral exam
Methods Practical work in the chemical laboratory
