Objectives The subject "Polymer Technology" covers the scientific and technical training of plastic engineers and qualifies for further master programs with the topics polymer technologies and science, management in polymer technology or polymer chemistry.

In particular, the subject "Polymer Technology" covers the practical and theoretical topics/knowledge of materials science and testing of polymeric materials, general and specific characterization of polymers, polymer processing, polymer machinery and tool manufacturing, applied heat transfer and Rheology, dimensioning and design of plastics and composite material components and component tests.

Subject Applied Heat Transfer
Basic concepts and methods in heat transfer, thermal radiation, steady-state heat conduction, heat transmission, cooling fins, transient heat conduction, convective heat transfer, heat exchanger, heating and cooling processes in polymer engineering.

Applications of Polymeric Materials
Existing markets and future market trends for polymer applications; case studies of commercial polymer applications highlighting specific aspects of market strategies along with application related success factors; this includes how special service and economic requirements are met by tailored materials property profiles, by proper design and by selecting adequate and optimized polymer conversion and processing techniques.

Characterization and Testing of Polymeric Materials 1
Importance and positioning of the subject; general aspects related to standards and standardization; mechanical testing of plastics (monotonic tensile, compressive & flexural tests; impact, long-term static and fatigue testing); mechanical testing of advanced composites (monotonic tensile, compressive, flexural & short beam shear tests; interlaminar crack growth & damage tolerance testing); thermo-mechanical properties and elevated temperature exposure (mechanical spectrometry & thermal expansion, shape stability under heat & softening temperatures, shrinkage & shrinkage stresses, determination of temperature limits); flame (fire) resistance.

Design and Dimensioning of Plastic Components
Design and dimensioning of polymeric components of neat, discontinuous and continuous fiber reinforced polymers as well as sandwich structures. Basic considerations of material and processing relevant design methods. Definition of dimension stability, tolerances, clearance and surface roughness as well as the relevant measurement methods for practical industrial applications. Thermo-mechanical properties of isotropic and anisotropic plastics, basics of material models for finite element simulations. Stiffness and strength calculations under various loading conditions (static monotonic, impact and cyclic). Analysis and application of typical machine elements from polymeric materials.

Lightweight design concepts for industrial applications, lightweight design of structural parts and assemblies of structural parts with particular consideration of material properties, manufacturing processes and joining technologies.
